Bonner Springs basketball coach resigns to be Ottawa schools IT director

OTTAWA — Bonner Springs boys basketball coach Andy Price has resigned to become the IT director for Ottawa schools. The Basehor Sentinel reported that the Bonner Springs school board had to approve the early resignation for Price so he could leave for Ottawa March 30. Price is the second-winningest coach in Bonner Springs history. He has also served as assistant IT director for Bonner Springs schools.

Osawatomie seeks volunteers for city boards

OSAWATOMIE — The city of Osawatomie is looking for nine volunteers to sit on four city boards. The Osawatomie Journal reported there are two vacancies on the city planning commission, two on the new parks and recreation commission, three on the tourism committee and two on the economic development council. Applications are due by Thursday. Applications may be dropped off at city hall, mailed to P.O. Box 37, or by e-mail to cityclerk@osawatomieks.org.

Garnett teen treated for injuries following three-vehicle crash south of Ottawa Saturday

OTTAWA — A Garnett teenager was taken to Ransom Memorial Hospital Saturday morning following a three-vehicle crash on U.S. 59 about five miles south of Ottawa. Kirkland Smith, 59, Ottawa was pulling a farm trailer with his car north on U.S. 59 at a slow speed, the Kansas Highway Patrol said. Virginia Nelson, 63, Richmond; came up behind Smith but didn’t pass because of heavy southbound traffic and put on her warning flashers. Destiny Bowen, 18, Garnett; didn’t slow down in time and rear-ended Nelson’s car, which then rear-ended Smith’s trailer, the highway patrol said. Bowen was taken to RMH. Nelson may have been injured but refused an ambulance, the highway patrol said. Smith wasn’t injured.

Open valve results in ammonia leak in north Ottawa

OTTAWA — Ottawa firefighters were summoned to a small leak from a small Ottawa Co-op anhydrous ammonia tank Sunday evening. The fire department received a report of an ammonia leak in the area, and Fire Chief Jeff Carner said the leak came from an open valve on a small nurse tank. Co-op personnel were summoned and closed the tank valve without further incident. The ammonia leak appeared to be minmal, Carner said.

Update: Wellsville woman booked into jail for attempted murder

OTTAWA — A 36-year-old Wellsville woman has been booked into the Franklin County jail on a charge of attempted first-degree murder. Cathy Lynn Hendry, 3270 Thomas Rd., is being held on a $150,000 bond. Hendry is being held in connection with a domestic dispute occurring Thursday at her home at near LeLoup, Sheriff Jeff Curry said. The dispute included Joseph Soppe, who formerly lived at her home, Curry said. A gun was involved in the incident, he said.

La Nina means mild winter, but wild consequence for Anderson County

GARNETT — The La Nina has meant an unusually mild winter for Anderson County. But La Nina has also meant a continued drought with only a slight chance that the area will see any relief in coming weeks. State climatologist Mary Knapp told the Anderson County Review that last year was the 19th driest year since 1949, as far back as local weather records go. Garnett ended 2011 more than 5 inches below the average precipitation. Garnett would need 14 inches of precipitation this month and in February to catch up, she said. That’s unlikely and Knapp said that much precipitation in such a short wouldn’t be desirable.

U.S. 59 closed this morning north of Baldwin Junction

BALDWIN JUNCTION – Motorists reported U-S 59 was blocked this morning about two miles north of the Baldwin Junction and traffic was being detoured to rural road around the accident scene. According to the Lawrence Journal-World, at least one person was injured, but the person’s injuries were not believed to be critical, and medical supervisors canceled a helicopter ambulance that was on standby.

Kansas Senators and Representatives push for Medal of Honor

WASHINGTON D.C. – Kansas Senators and Representatives are encouraging the United States Department of Defense to award a Kansan with a Medal of Honor. Father Emil Kapaun of Pilsen, KS served as a chaplan of the 8th Cavalry Regiment of the First Army Division in the Korean War. His time was spent doing selfless acts, such as caring for wounded soldiers, and escaping a prison camp to bring back food for starving prisoners, until his death in 1951. U.S. Senators Pat Roberts and Jerry Moran and U.S. Representatives Tim Huelskamp, Lynn Jenkins, Kevin Yoder and Mike Pompeo sent a joint letter yesterday to Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta to encourage the posthumous honoring of Father Emil Kapaun.

KDOT ahead of schedule on road repairs

TOPEKA- Kansas is jumping the gun on road repairs and has no reason to slow down. The Kansas Department of Transportation will accelerate T-Works projects that were slated for 2013. A total of 32 projects will be advanced ahead of schedule, which Governor Brownback says will “create hundreds of construction jobs sooner than planned and provide an economic benefit to thousands of other Kansans and businesses.” Savings attained in recent projects are part of the reason KDOT can move forward. All of the projects are covered under the 10-year, $8 billion T-Works Transportation Program passed by the 2010 Legislature.
