GARNETT — The Garnett City Commission will discuss a request Tuesday evening by a Topeka animal welfare lawyer to loosen the city’s ban against certain breeds of dogs.\ Katie Bray Barnett, of Best Friends Animal Society told the Anderson County Review she is acting on behalf of a Garnett resident who wants to adopt a dog prohibited by the city’s ordinance on aggressive dogs. Garnett bans aggressive dogs or those dog breeds that have a reputation of being aggressive. That ban includes pit bull or Rottweiler breeds. There is an exception — owners can keep aggressive dogs if the dogs are kept in a secured, fenced-in area with a top attached and the pen securely locked, as well as requiring insurance for the dogs. The dogs must be kept on a leash at all times when they are outside its their confinement area. Barnett wants the city to change the ordinance to remove the ban against pit bull and Rottweiler breeds. She said such bans against particular breeds don’t work. Commissioners will also have a hearing on whether to loosen the city’s rules on garage sales. The city commission will meet 6 p.m. Tuesday at Garnett City Hall.
