OTTAWA — Famed psychiatrist Walt Menninger will be the speaker for Ottawa University’s annual Hostetter-Defries Family Endowed Cultural Event Nov. 19 and 20 in the Fredrikson Chapel. Menninger will speak at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 19 on “Civil Disobedience: High Risk, High Gain?” At 11 a.m. Thursday, he’ll talk on “Adaptation and Morale; Predictable Responses to Change.” Menninger is a third generation member of one of America’s leading medical families. His grandfather, father and uncle established the Menninger Clinic in Topeka in 1925. He served as chief of staff and CEO of the Menninger School of Psychiatry before retiring in 2001 at the age of 70. Menninger continues to consult at the Menninger Clinic, which is now in Houston. Following the assassination of presidential candidate Sen. Robert Kennedy in 1968, Menninger was appointed by Pres. Lyndon Johnson to a 13-member national commission on the causes and prevention of violence. He was the first psychiatrist to be named to a national investigatory commission by a U.S. president. His speeches are free and open to the public.
