WELLSVILLE — The Wellsville Historical Society has received a $90,000 grant from the Kansas Historical Society’s Heritage Trust Fund to restore a historic Wellsville building as a museum and headquarters for the society. The society bought the former Wellsville Bank building, 418 Main St., a year and a half ago and began raising funds to restore the building but needed additional funding to complete the project. The bank was built in 1884, and was the first brick building and bank in Wellsville, the historical society’s Janet Broers said. The building is on the National Register of Historic Places. The process of restoring the building was developed by an architectural engineer and is expected to take about four years, Broers said. The completed project will be good not only for Wellsville but for all of Franklin County. The Wellsville museum would be the sixth in the county and would join the Old Depot Museum and the Plaza Theater Movie Museum, both of Ottawa; the Richmond Community Museum, the Williamsburg Community Museum, and the Appanoose Area Museum. The Wellsville Historical Society is now in an office suite at Layton Real Estate, Wellsville.
