Garnett lake may have blue-algae boom

GARNETT — Garnett’s Crystal Lake likely has an outbreak of dangerous blue-green algae.  The lake, which is in Veterans Memorial Park on the south edge of Garnett, was closed last week. City officials said people and their pets will need to avoid contact with the lake water until further notice.  The park will remain open for camping and picnicking.  At Tuesday night’s city commission meeting, Garnett city manager Joyce Martin said the Kansas Dept. of Health and Environment collected water samples for testing the lake water.  The algae bloom appears to be in coves on the north side of the lake and next to the water treatment plant, she said.  However, the threat doesn’t affect local drinking water, she said.  The water plant hasn’t drawn water from the lake ever since the city built a new water line between the water plant and the Cedar Valley Reservoir.
