Garnett lake take off blue-green algae warning list

Posted in Uncategorized by kofonews on August 31, 2015

GARNETT — Crystal Lake, the city lake on the south edge of Garnett, has reopened. Tests by the Kansas Dept. of Health and Environment confirm the lake is now free of blue-green algae, also known as cyanobacteria, Garnett city manager Joyce Martin said. The lake was closed earlier this month after tests indicated the dangerous blue-green algae was found in some coves near the city’s water treatment plant. The threat didn’t affect drinking water because the water plant draws water from a pipeline from the Cedar Valley Reservoir west of the city. Ending the warning for the Garnett lake leaves seven lakes across the state under blue-green algae warnings. The other in the area is the Melvern Lake Outlet Pond in Osage County.
