Baldwin State Tournament

EMPORIA – The glass slipper broke for underdog Baldwin High School as Girard ended the dream of a state title Thursday afternoon. Girard High School Trojans came in to the Kansas 4A Division II tournament undefeated and proved why with the thrashing of the Bulldogs by the final score of 77-49. Girard had the size and experience advantage against Baldwin who were fielding a young squad that had a rough regular season, but found a way to win their sub-state. Baldwin were outshot, out rebounded and out hustled as they lost the free throw and rebound game to a Trojan squad that was up for the task in Emporia. Girard out rebounded Baldwin 46 to 19 and had a 16 to five advantage on the offenseive glass while controlling the defensive side of the boards 30 to 14. The Bulldogs of Baldwin had two players who finished with double figures in Austin Ward who had 11 on four of 11 shooting, but was three of four from the three point arc. Jackson Barth chipped in with 10 points in the losing effort. The Trojans had four players with double digit point totals in the ball game. Drew David led the both teams with 22 points, while Laike Damman, Eric Wilson and Kross Hamblin had 10 points each. Baldwin finished their season at seven and 16 while making the boys first appearance at state since 2000. Girard stayed unbeaten with 23 wins.
