City OKs Sunday alcohol sales

Posted in Uncategorized by kofonews on July 7, 2016

OTTAWA — The Ottawa City Commission approved an ordinance Wednesday allowing Sunday liquor sales.  Under the ordinance, liquor can be sold from noon until 8 p.m. Sundays, excluding Easter and Christmas.  The commissioners approved the measure on a 4-1 vote.   The dissenting vote came from Commissioner Mike Skidmore, who noted that increasingly, Sundays are losing their significance as a family day, and Sunday sales would accelerate the trend.  Under the ordinance, liquor can be sold on Sundays from noon until 8 p.m. Sundays, excluding Easter and Christmas, said city attorney Blaine Finch.  The measure will take effect 61 days after final publication in the Ottawa Herald, unless a petition is filed objecting to the ordinance.  If enough voters sign a protest petition, the matter would then go to an election.  Commissioners unanimously approved an ordinance allowing alcohol sales at temporary events.
