Powerful storms cut power; fell trees, power lines

OTTAWA – Powerful storms rolled through Ottawa and the surrounding area Friday evening. Winds blew down tree limbs, and uprooted a few trees, and interrupting power. Two large trees knocked down power lines and poles, which interrupted service on two circuits on the north and south sides, causing lights to flicker and in some areas, cuttting electricity for a few hours, said Dennis Tharp, city director of utilities. “Whenever we have that much damage, it takes some time,” Tharp said. A couple of smaller outages were dealt with more quickly, he said. Crews from the Ottawa public works department will collect tree limbs from the storms, and placed at curbside. Crews will begin pick up on Aug. 1st and continue until complete. To make collection easier and safer, the city asks people to stack limbs parallel and close to the street curb. Collections will not be made from alleys because of space constraints. The city also has a free collection site for citizens to haul their own brush and limbs, at the intersection of North Cherry and Enterprise Road. Look for the sign posted on the dump site.
